Our kudos to City Councilwoman Gale Brewer for her timely bed bug bill that would set up a task force and restrictions against mattress reconditioning and resale under penalty of fines up to $1,000. And kudos for taking a lead from a Queens Courier article and promising to add a resolution to the bill that would ban pickups of potentially-infested furniture or mattresses on the same delivery trucks as new pieces.
We think that the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) should re-examine its position on the record infestation of the city. The DOHMH claims the creepy little blood-sucking insects do not pose a health threat, as they are not disease carriers. Any critter that sucks blood, bites victims as they sleep and leaves multiple welts may not be a health threat, but they sure are the stuff of nightmares.
Since the DOHMH has determined that one out of three households already uses pesticides that may be hazardous to their health, having residents spraying bed bugs with over-the-counter insect poisons must be dangerous to somebody’s health!
Call a threat a threat and help deal with the health crisis!
