Holy Cross climbs into first place

Holy Cross Coach Paul Gilvary was surprisingly upbeat after a tough overtime loss at St. Raymond’s a few weeks back. Maybe he knew what the future held.
Since then, the Knights have won five of six, including a solid home win over St. Raymond’s, putting them a game up on the Ravens in the loss column for the top spot in the CHSAA ‘AA’ East.
The sophomore sensation Sylven Landesberg has been brilliant in his first year of varsity ball, leading Holy Cross - and the Catholic League - in scoring at 21 points-per-game.
He continued to impress in the win over St. Raymond’s, putting up 28 points, six rebounds and five assists. But it’s been the emergence of 6-foot-9 center Laurence Jolicoeur that has led the Knights to four straight wins.
“When he plays well, he just makes us a much better team,” Gilvary said. Jolicoeur only had eight points and five rebounds in just 19 minutes against the Ravens yet registered four blocks.
Impressive sophomore point guard Trinity Fields added 13 points for Holy Cross (12-9, 5-3 CHSAA East).

In Girls action, Christ the King extended their win streak to 45 with a 66-49 win over Philadelphia-power Archbishop Carroll. Tina Charles had 24 points and 18 rebounds for the Royals (18-0, 9-0 CHSAA I).
Molloy topped St. Francis Prep, 65-47. Angie Waterman led the Stanners (13-6, 6-3 CHSAA I) with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Also, Mary Louis (11-8, 5-4 CHSAA I) nipped Bishop Loughlin, 62-58, behind Casey Shevlin’s 16 points.
