Tackling Obesity One Patient at a Time
BY MELISSA HENDRICKS
New York Hospital Queens has graciously offered the services of acclaimed nutritionist Mary Grace Webb, MA RD CDN, to two of the six contestants involved in this year’s Queens Biggest Losers Contest.
Webb is part of the hospital’s Bariatric Surgery Center/CRT Surgical Associates. The Bariatric Surgery Center is a comprehensive weight management center that deals with thousands of overweight and extremely obese people living in our community, employing the techniques and practices of doctors, surgeons and nutritionists to help people gain their quality of life back.
“The problem for many is inactivity and rising portions along with overwhelming amounts of stress,” added Webb. “People need to step up their activity level each day by taking the stairs rather than an elevator or parking a little further away than you need to. Little steps like that can really make a difference and help people control their weight.”
Initially, the center provides patients with an outpatient evaluation to help ascertain the exact needs and weight problems of each individual patient.
“We screen all candidates and give them a nutritional assessment to prescribe the best weight loss plan for them,” said Webb. “We take into account the medical history of the patient as well as their lifestyle.”
The center offers their clients a host of services to help them achieve their weight loss goals. Webb and the staff at CRT Associates, help patients to modify the behaviors that have led to their obesity through strategic dieting, increase in activity, support groups and behavioral therapy. The center now even has a weight loss program for children and young adults with weight loss issues.
