Third-seeded York College shocked No.1 Baruch College, 72-62, to win the CUNYAC/Con Edison men’s championship Friday evening at the College of Staten Island. Guard Shayne Smith, who led the Cardinals with 19 points, eight rebounds and six steals, was named the tournament MVP. Teron Simpson scored 17 points off the bench, Jeffrey Boone, a graduate of August Martin High School, added 12 points, eight rebounds and six steals and Christopher Roberts chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.
York led by 10, 31-21, at halftime, but Baruch battled back to tie the game at 48. Simpson, however, answered with a 3-pointer.
York (15-13) earned retribution for the last time they reached the CUNYAC final, a 52-50 loss to Baruch in 2000. Cheik Fadika led Baruch (23-5) with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
