King Carmichael Sr.

King Carmichael Sr., one of the six Carmichael brothers and two sisters whose economic and civic success inspired the residents of the Southeast Queens community, passed away recently. He had been living in South Ozone Park.
A native of Springfield, South Carolina, his family founded the first African American school & church. He later served as a Staff Sergeant in Korea, where he was wounded, and headed the family’s world-renowned Carmichael’s Diner at “Carmichael’s Corner” in Jamaica.
Dignitaries from every sector of public and private life were avid patrons of the restaurant whose food and hospitality became legend.
Presidents, senators, governors, mayors, prominent clergy, educators, and others frequented the restaurant, as well as civic leaders and theatre and music personalities.
Carmichael was a highly-respected leader of the community and a great supporter of his church and many civic organizations. His generosity and benevolence were well known.
Carmichael is survived by his wife, Mae Board Carmichael, two children, six grandchildren, sisters and brothers.
Funeral services were held on April 2 at the Dunton Presbyterian Church.
