Another banner day for Terriers

The St. Francis Prep girls tennis team was unable to build upon their unbeaten streak of 115 consecutive matches because the second weekend of the Mayor’s Cup was an individual competition. But they still took home the girls singles and doubles titles Sunday, June 11th at the National Tennis Center in Flushing.
Actually, it was impossible for them not to win both competitions; all the finalists were Terriers. “It is really unusual,” St. Francis Prep Coach John Brennan said. “I thought it might happen, but the difficult thing is I really have to be impartial because obviously they’re all on my team. I want them all to do well.”
Sophomore Shinann Featherston, the top-ranked player in the Eastern Tennis Association 18-and-under division, rolled, 6-0, 6-1, over Katarina Kovacevic. In their final match with St. Francis Prep, seniors Martina Featherston, Shinann’s sister, and Kathrin Sorokko, edged out Karen Roa and Natalie Fouche, 6-3, 6-4. Martina Featherston and Sorokko lost in the Mayor’s Cup doubles final a year ago to Midwood’s King sisters, Laken and Carlissa. “I wanted to see Martina and Kathrin go out as the winners they are,” said Brennan.
