As the Varadi Ovarian Initiative for Cancer Education (VOICE) celebrates its one year anniversary, it is getting ready to have its first annual Achievement Dinner Dance in September.
VOICE, in conjunction with the New York University School of Medicine, was established by Charles “Chick” Rudy to honor his significant other, North Shore Towers resident Dr. Marilyn Varadi. Its goal is to educate others about the early warning signs for ovarian cancer, which some call a “silent killer.” According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 20,180 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in 2006 with approximately 15,310 women dying from it.
The organization’s first annual Achievement Dinner Dance will take place on Wednesday, September 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the North Hills Country Club and will benefit VOICE and the NYU Clinical Cancer Center.
This year’s honorees are Tom Donovan, a partner at Massey Knakal Real Estate who heads the Queens office, and Donald Rubin, the co-chairman of the Rubin Museum of Art and chairman of MultiPlan Inc.
Dr. James L. Speyer, the Medical Director of the New York University Clinical Cancer Center, will be the guest speaker.
The evening will include a cocktail hour, dinner, dance music provided by Harmony Music, raffles and a silent auction of entertainment and sports memorabilia. Raffle items include a five day/four night stay for two at The Casa de Campo resort in the Dominican Republic, art by Peter Max, a Tourneau men’s watch, a Swarovski crystal heart pendent by Alyssa Dubin and liquor from Southern Wine and Spirits of New York, along with various gift certificates and other items.
A special item being raffled is a turquoise Awareness Afghan, the color symbolizing ovarian cancer. This project for raising awareness about ovarian cancer was conceived by Rochelle Sendar and is supported by the Knitting Place of Port Washington. The Knitting Place will assemble the 13 inch squares knitted by participants into afghans. To take part in this project, contact Rochelle at (718) 309-3717 or the Knitting Place at (516) 944-9276.
Rudy said that, since its inception, VOICE has received a great deal of positive support and already has a list of “Friends for Life.” Among them are Merrill Lynch, Jay Grossman of The Global Private Client Group, Astoria Federal Savings, Philip Pilevsky, the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation and Edna Mashaal Realty.
The honorary co-chairs of the First Annual Achievement Dinner Dance are Dr. David F. Fishman and Dr. John P. Curtain, leaders in the field of ovarian cancer.
People wishing to attend should RSVP by August 18.
