Shaughnessy wins Forest Hills tournament

American Meghann Shaughnessy won the 2006 Forest Hills WTA Sony Ericsson Classic, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 over Anna Smashnova of Israel. Shaughnessy, ranked 64th in the world and unseeded in the tournament held at the West Side Tennis Club, the former home of the U.S. Open, nearly lost in the first round to Marta Domachowska, rallying for a 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory. A Scottsdale, AZ native, the 5-foot-11 Shaughnessy, 27, won her next two matches in straight sets before topping Smashnova, ranked 61st in the world, for her fifth career singles victory.
