300 millionth American born in Elmhurst

The American population reached 300 million on Tuesday, October 17 with the birth of a baby boy coming at Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens. Emanuel Plata became the 300 millionth American citizen at 7:46 a.m., the precise time the U.S. Census Bureau anticipated the milestone would be reached.
&#8220New York City is the immigration center of the world, and we took the liberty to claim Emanuel as the 300 millionth American,” said Chris Constantino, Executive Director at Elmhurst Hospital Center.
Emanuel, who was delivered via cesarean section, weighed in at 6 lbs., 15 oz., and measured 18.5 inches in length. Both of his parents, Griselda Plata and Armando Jimenez, are Mexican immigrants who emigrated to the United States about three years ago. Emanuel also has two siblings, ages six and two.
&#8220We're pleased with this great event,” said Dr. Barry Brown, who delivered Emanuel.
Brown stated that it was a typical delivery and that the hospital generally delivers about 12 babies per day, with over 4,300 deliveries per year. Brown also noted that 65 to 70 percent of babies born at Elmhurst Hospital Center are Hispanic.
&#8220It's no surprise that the 300 millionth American has been born in a New York City public hospital to an immigrant family,” said New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation president Alan Aviles. &#8220Like America, New York City's public hospitals have grown and changed in amazing ways. But one part of our history has remained the same: we continue to be the preferred medical home for our city's immigrant families.
Other hospitals throughout New York City came close to having the 300 millionth birth, as Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan delivered a baby at 7:55 a.m., while Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn delivered a child at 7:57 a.m.
Despite all the excitement surrounding the birth of the 300 millionth American occurring in New York, other hospitals around the nation are claiming the 300 millionth birth as theirs.
&#8220I'm sure there were other babies born at that time,” Brown said, &#8220but it's a representation for our city and for our country.
