The way I hear it . .
John Mayer's new album, &#8220Continuum,” is his attempt to break out of the pop singer stereotype he has been fitted with.
That is why for his millions of female fans who swoon at the sound of &#8220Your Body is a Wonderland” and search for Kleenex when &#8220Daughters” comes on the radio, this new album will be a surprise.
It has more of a blues feel. Mayer even credits Eric Clapton by saying, &#8220He knows I steal from him and is still cool with it.”
Critics are taking notice and praising Mayer for the album, noting his great mastery of the guitar, soulful lyrics, and smooth vocals.
In this album, Mayer also expresses his political side with the songs &#8220Waiting on the World to Change” and &#8220Belief.” But just because Mayer is showing another side to his songwriting, it does not mean his loyal fans will be disappointed.
Five of the 12 songs on &#8220Continuum” are about relationships, something Mayer is known for writing about. However, it is a different aspect. In his previous albums, Mayer wrote about falling or being in love.
This collection of songs shows a more mature phase of love - letting go. His lyrics are especially powerful in &#8220Slow Dancing in a Burning Room,” which takes us through the bitterness of a harsh break-up.
This album is proof of Mayer's growth as an artist. Apparently, we still have a lot to hear from him. As he says in one song, &#8220I'm in repair, I'm not together, but I'm getting there.” Personally, I cannot wait to hear about it.
