Queens College has announced a partnership between CUNY and the National Yiddish Theatre - Folksbiene, which will result in performances being brought to Queens audiences.
This new partnership hopes to bring Yiddish culture and music to new audiences. The series will make its first stop in Queens on Monday, November 20, when “The Lottery,” by Sholem Aleichem, is performed. The show will begin at 2 p.m. in the Goldstein Theater at Queens College.
A second program will be brought to Queens College on Monday, December 18. This time, audiences will be able to see a production of “The Witch” by Abraham Goldfaden, which is said to be the first Yiddish operetta performed in America. The performance will once again being at 2 p.m., taking place in the college's LeFrak Concert Hall.
When the Yiddish theatre returns in March, it will perform “Purim in Khelm” to help celebrate Purim, a Jewish Holiday. It will be at Queens College's Colden Auditorium on Wednesday, March 7, at 2 p.m.
The final installation of the partnership will be in May with the new musical “Gimpl the Fool,” which is based on the short story of the same name by Isaac Bashevis Singer. This show will be at Queens College on Monday, May 14, at 2 p.m. in its Goldstein Theater.
