The Independent Private Parochial School Athletic League (IPPSAL) Division II Championship returned to Queens when the Kew-Forest Jaguars varsity soccer team defeated the Waldorf School, 4-3, with an exhilarating shootout victory.
Back and forth play left the game tied at three after regulation and sent the game into overtime where both teams could not net the golden goal that would give them the championship. A shootout was needed to decide this year's champion.
In the shootout, Kew-Forest was up to the challenge recording a 3-0 margin on penalty kicks when Kew-Forest goalie, senior Ameen Beydoun, scored the final kick that clinched the victory.
“I am very proud of all the hard work the team has put forth this year juggling very rigorous academic schedules with daily practices,” said Kew-Forest coach Ramie Gatchalian. “This is a very special group of student-athletes.”
The Kew-Forest team's championship, in a league traditionally dominated by schools from Long Island, capped off a tremendous season for the team after they posted an 8-1-2 record during the regular season.
