Students at the Kew-Forest School in Forest Hills showed that the holiday season is more about giving then receiving.
Kindergarten through second grade students donated $1,000 that they raised through a bake-sale to the Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Huntington, Long Island.
“Our $1,000 seems like a $1 million to the kids,” said Michele Manos, the second grade teacher at Kew-Forest who has been organizing the bake-sale for a number of years.
Recently, Arleen Leone, special programs manager from the Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center came to the school to accept the check and gave the students a presentation about the responsibilities of being a pet owner.
Leone also discussed with the students the importance of the shelter, which rescues pets from kill facilities, rehabilitates them and finds them a home.
“It's overwhelming to see the excitement in their faces to realize what they are being taught,” Leone said. “It's all about giving, and they understand that. We are overwhelmed by the generosity of this particular school.”
Manos said that in addition to the bake sale raising money for the shelter, it also gives her students first hand experiences with learning about measurements while baking the goods, and money when they sell the goods.
