New bus shelters coming

Waiting for the bus in bad weather will soon be a little nicer as the city installs 3,300 new bus shelters, the first of which was unveiled on Queens Boulevard recently.
Through the city's Coordinated Street Furniture Franchise and a partnership with Cemusa, Inc., the boroughs will receive not only the new bus shelters but also 20 new public toilets and 330 newsstands will be replaced. It is estimated that the city will receive approximately $1.4 billion in revenue.
The first of the new bus shelters was unveiled at Queens Boulevard and 82nd Avenue on Tuesday, December 18.
&#8220For years, New Yorkers have been waiting for new street furniture, and today, they will finally begin to see the results of this agreement,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
Department of Transportation Commissioner Iris Weinshall added, &#8220The new street furniture will generate revenue, enliven city streets, and enhance public transportation. The bus shelters offer improved lighting and route information, both of which will benefit the 2.5 million people who use the city's bus system everyday.”
Along with adding street furniture and increasing revenue in the city, more jobs will also be created.
&#8220Cemusa is committed to New York and is proud to be working with communities around the city,” said Toulla Constantinou, the CEO of Cemusa, Inc. &#8220We anticipate creating more than 100 jobs, and are off to a strong start with offices in Manhattan and manufacturers in Queens and the Bronx. The new street furniture will service residents throughout the five boroughs, and we will continue building local partnerships.”
