The New York Press Association Foundation is giving 11th and 12th grade students a chance to win a $10,000 scholarship through an essay contest exploring the First Amendment.
The statewide competition will select one winner to receive a $10,000 college scholarship. The second place prize is $250 and the third place prize is $100.
The topic of the essay, which should be a maximum length of 500 words, is for students to “interpret the First Amendment and discuss the role it plays in American life.
For instance, you may include discussions of the First Amendment’s importance with regard to school newspapers, local communities, or state and federal government.”
Essays must be sent to the student’s local newspaper by February 15, 2007, who will then select a winning essay that will be published in the paper.
Local winning essays will then be forwarded to take part in the statewide competition.
All submissions must include an official entry form.
Essays must be typed and double-spaced, with the complete text of the First Amendment must be typed at the top of the first page of the essay.
Queens students can send their essays to The Queens Courier, Attention: Essay Contest, 38-15 Bell Boulevard, Bayside, NY 11361.
Please be sure to include the student’s address, telephone number and school that he or she attends.
