Following a recent national survey, the North Shore-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health System has been designated as a Neuroscience Center of Excellence.
“Center of Excellence designees represent many of the leading innovative programs across the country, and North Shore-LIJ is proud to be recognized for our multidisciplinary approach and commitment to the highest standards of neurological and neurosurgical patient care,” said North Shore-LIJ president and CEO Michael J. Dowling.
NeuroSource, Inc., based in Chicago, and HealthTech, based in San Francisco, co-sponsored the 2006 Neuroscience Center of Excellence Survey, which analyzed 150 neuroscience programs in 41 states. The four main areas that it focused on were clinical and research programs, staff, facilities and technology, and business.
Of the programs examined, 42 percent were given scores high enough to earn them recognition as Neuroscience Centers of Excellence.
“The survey findings underscore the importance of North Shore-LIJ’s multi-specialty approach to patient care as we compare our programs to the best in the nation,” said Dr. Thomas Milhorat, the chief of neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ and director of Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience, which is part of the health system.
