Frankie Avalon is a blast from the past

Bandstand is back, at least for one afternoon. Famed trumpeter/singer/actor Frankie Avalon and his son, Frankie Jr., will take the stage at Queensborough Community College on Sunday, April 29, and play popular tunes from the 1950s and 1960s.
The performance, scheduled for 3 p.m., will be held in Queensborough Performing Arts Center, located on QCC’s campus at 222-05 56th Avenue in Bayside.
A former teen idol, Avalon began playing the trumpet on TV by the time he was 12. In high school, American Bandstand’s Dick Clark noticed the young musician and brought him on the show several times.
Avalon cut his first album in 1958 and his songs rode the top of the charts with 13 singles in the Billboard Top 40 including Venus, Cupid, and Why. A teen heartthrob, Avalon also appeared in a number of popular beach party movies in the 1960s.
He appeared as Teen Angel in the movie version of Grease in 1978 and in 1985 began touring with other teen idols Bobby Rydell and Fabian as “The Golden Boys of Bandstand.”
Frankie Jr. will accompany him on drums on the QPAC stage.
For tickets to Avalon’s performance, call the QCC box office at 718-631-6311, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.visitqpac.org. Tickets to the show are $45, and ample parking on the college’s campus is available.
