Students can study jazz - at no cost - and earn college credits too at York College this summer.
The Summer Jazz Institute (SJI) is offered by York College to public high school sophomore and junior jazz musicians. This is their third annual SJI, a tuition-free program from July 9 through August 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Students must be able to read music, have their own instruments and a basic musical knowledge. Participating students will receive five college credits over the five-week session for their study of jazz performance and music theory.
This wonderful opportunity provides students with professional training and a chance to show what they have learned, by giving three performances.
They will perform at an evening event for parents, their graduation ceremony, on their last day and a performance at the Louis Armstrong House that will give high school students the opportunity to see what its like to work in a professional band as well as get the feel for college life while studying on the campus.
Applications for the Summer Jazz Institute will be accepted now through May 7, while auditions begin on May 18. For further information, please call 718-262-2412 or visit https://tomzlabinger.com/sjiapplication.pdf for a printable application and address where it can be mailed.
