Most popular baby names list

Social Security’s 2006 list of Most Popular Baby Names shows that some names never go out of style.
“Based on more than 4.2 million Social Security card applications for children born last year, mothers and fathers have picked Emily and Jacob as the most popular baby names for the eighth year in a row,” said Michael J. Astrue, the Commissioner of Social Security.
Following the name Emily, the other top 10 names for girls in 2006 were Emma, Madison, Isabella, Ava, Abigail, Olivia, Hannah, Sophia and Samantha. For boys, the list also included Michael, Joshua, Ethan, Matthew, Daniel, Christopher, Andrew, Anthony and William.
Emily has been at the top of the list since 1996 and Jacob since 1999. This marks the first year that the name Sophia has been in the top 10.
Specifically in New York State, the top five names for girls were Emily, Isabella, Ave, Olivia and Sophia and the top five names for boys were Michael, Matthew, Joseph, Anthony and Christopher.
