Kayla McCusker pitched Queens HS of Teaching to their first PSAL ‘B’ crown, one-hitting No. 3 Long Island City in a complete-game 3-0 shutout at St. John’s University Sunday afternoon. The senior struck out 14 and drove in a run to complete her high school career on a high note. “It’s just softball, I love it,” she said. “I go out and try to pitch every game like this.”
Top-seeded Queens High School of Teaching won Queens I-B for the second straight season, even with McCusker missing part of the season because of academic ineligibility. She returned in time to win three regular season games and rack up two saves, compiling a 1.22 ERA and striking out 45 in 23 innings pitched. She only got better in the postseason, winning all six of her starts and whiffing 67 in 33 innings.
“She came into this year with a little bit of a setback,” Queens HS of Teaching Coach Ramariette Carrasco said. “She has a fighting spirit.”
