North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Center for Advanced Medicine, located in Lake Success, is now home to the state-of-the-art Arthur Smith Institute for Urology following LIJ Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital combining their programs.
The institute employs “internationally renowned experts” and has 12 full-time physicians and about 18 visiting ones. It is equipped with 14 exam rooms, two procedure rooms, and an urodynamic suite.
Among the urological diseases that the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology will treat are prostate cancer, bladder cancer, renal cell carcinoma, testes cancer, interstitial cystitis, kidney and ureteral calculi, prostatitis, infectious diseases, benign prostatic hyperplasia and incontinence.
The institute is named for LIJ Department of Urology chairman emeritus Dr. Arthur D. Smith. He held the position for 25 years and developed Endourology, which is “the treatment of urological conditions using minimally invasive techniques.”
In the future, the institute also hopes to create a Pelvic Pain Center and a Men’s Health Center.
