The dog days of summer are here, and the thermometer is rising. According to the National Weather Service’s forecast, temperatures in Queens are expected to hit at least 80 degrees every day through next week - Tuesday, August 14.
While many Queens workers may be positioned close to an air conditioning unit or within arms’ reach of a water fountain, many others have jobs that require them to work outside in the blistering heat or indoors in close proximity to hot equipment.
The Queens Courier decided to find 10 of the hottest jobs in the borough, ranging from gardeners to asphalt layer to an air conditioning technician.
However, perhaps the hottest job citywide was omitted from the list.
New York City’s Finest have to fight several different kinds of heat daily.
They spend many hours dashing into burning blazes. Additionally, firefighters must wear full gear, which weighs roughly 50 pounds and includes an air tank that they carry on their backs.
According to the monthly report issued by the Fire Department of New York, firefighters in Queens responded to 419 structural fires in July 2007 alone, and their average response time in that month was 5 minutes and 29 seconds.
