Members of Councilmember John Liu’s summer 2007 Youth Action Team participate in a cleanup of Martin’s Field in Flushing. The one-time burial ground for African and Native Americans was also used to bury those who died during several 19th century disease outbreaks in the area. The kids earned school credits for event, which was held on Friday, August 17. In addition to weeding and tending to the planted areas, paths and lawns, they removed graffiti and heard a presentation from the Martin’s Field Conservancy on the historical significance of the space.
