Girl Scout Troop #4510, based in Bayside, collected 119 pounds of debris, including a tire, a folding chair and a muffler, from Golden Pond on Sunday, September 16, as part of a statewide Beach Cleanup organized by the Littoral Society. This was the second year the troop, led by Girl Scout Leader Linda Manginaro and Co-Leaders Stacey Dortch and Dorothy Matinale, participated in the cleanup at the pond, which is located within Crocheron Park in Bayside. Girl scouts (left to right) Jazzmin Stewart, Lauren Moy, Dorothy Matinale, Jaclyn Dortch, Candace Ali, and Alyssa Manginaro all pitched in. In addition (not pictured), Isabella Turzo, Keana Blackeney, and Morgan Grizzle participated but were taken to the hospital after they stumbled upon a bee’s nest.
Last year, 10,175 volunteers cleaned and gathered a documented 272,157 pounds of trash at 338 sites, according to the American Littoral Society. In Queens, 25 sites were scheduled for cleanups, and the efforts will continue in Far Rockaway through Thursday, October 4.
