McDonald’s is helping to ease the cost of attending college for eight Queens high school seniors who won $5,000 college scholarships through the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) for their individual achievements.
The RMHC/Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources (HACER) program, the largest Latino scholarship program in the nation, awards college scholarships to Latino high school seniors. Since the program began in 1985, more than 8,000 Hispanic students have received more than $8.5 million in scholarships to support their education. In addition, it has provided more than $4 million to local non-profit organizations whose programs improve the well-being of children and their families.
This year’s $5,000 winners were Lesly Alvarado from Jamaica High School, Nancy Barriga from Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, Grace Calle and Dionicia Torres from Washington Irving High School, Crystal Ramos and Jasmine Ramos from Wadleigh Secondary School, Stefan Riera of John Bowne High School and Daisy Sambolin from High School of Economics and Finance.
The RMHC/HACER awards the scholarships every year to Latino high school seniors who show evidence of scholastic achievement, portray exceptional leadership, commit themselves to community service, are dedicated to the advancement of the Latino community and show financial need.
