Meeks not backing wife

Politics makes for strange bedfellows, especially between husband and wife.
Not only did Simone-Marie Meeks announce her candidacy in the race for Councilmember Leroy Comrie’s seat in the 2009 election, but according to the reports, her husband, Congressmember Gregory Meeks, will be supporting his aide, Brian Simon, instead.
“Nobody can talk me out of this,” Simone-Marie Meeks said in published reports about the opposition she faces.
“At this time, Congressmember Meeks has no comment,” said Candace Sandy, spokesperson.
Simone-Marie Meeks also declined an interview, but admitted in reports that not only has her husband tried to talk her out of running for months, but public officials and “civic naysayers” tried convincing her it was the wrong time to run.
“I was amazed and angry, angry, angry initially, but I am over it,” Simone-Marie Meeks said in published reports.
An aide to Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, Simone-Marie Meeks said that she has had political ambitions since she was young and that now she is ready to put them in action.
Simon, who had experience working on presidential campaigns for Al Gore and Senator John Kerry, declined to comment.
Comrie has been councilmember for the St. Albans, Hollis, Cambria Heights, Jamaica, Baisley Pond Park, Addisleigh Park, Rosedale, Springfield Gardens and Queens Village area, but after finishing his second four-year term, he will not be eligible for re-election.
