Two Long Island men were arrested for stealing the identity of 12 victims by signing up for credit cards and trying to take out mortgages.
Nira Niru, 38, and Jacob Milton, 41, were arraigned on October 16 on 53 counts of various charges, including identity theft in the first degree, falsifying business records and grand larceny.
The investigation began in June when a resident reported to the 115th Precinct that her identity had been stolen.
Further investigation found that five people had complained of identity theft after they received bills for credit cards they had not applied for. Investigators also discovered that all 12 victims had applied for home mortgages through the Giffin Mortgage Company, which is not implicated in the scheme. However, both suspects procured mortgages through Griffin.
