True to their word, the owners of Bayside’s Powerhouse Gym - closed for a month after an extensive investigation turned up rampant steroid use - will give their members 30 days free now that the establishment is open once again.
Celebrating the gym’s grand reopening on Saturday, October 6, partners James Rappaport, Dennis Divone - and newly added Thomas DeCanio, formerly of Annamaria’s Bagels - promised “more hands-on ownership.”
Rappaport told The Queens Courier that he and Divone were “not involved in anything, not implicated, nor indicted” in reference to “Operation Dumbbell,” which shuttered the doors of Powerhouse - as well as that of the Envy Us Gym in College Point.
“We were left in limbo,” said Rappaport, who noted that Powerhouse is not associated with Envy Us. “We were in the dark as much as our members - who signed petitions [in our favor].”
Rappaport added that he and his co-owners have hired a completely new staff, and that, “in good faith, annual members will get the time lost and one month free.”
In addition, the facility is being renovated, new equipment has been purchased, and clients can receive a discount on Nutropia, a personalized gourmet nutrition program ($30 per day for 30 days).
DeCanio said that the majority of gym-goers remained faithful to Powerhouse, although some did move on to other establishments.
“Their time is honored too,” he said.
“Everyone is happy we’re open again,” said Rappaport. “It’s an overwhelming response — a lot of people said that this place is like home.”
Powerhouse Gym is located at 34-09 Francis Lewis Boulevard. They are open Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to midnight; and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
