When the Long Island City-based company Michael C. Fina got involved with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk, they set the goal of raising $25,000. However, their commitment to the cause enabled them to raise more than three times that amount.
“Civic responsibility has always been a big part of Michael C. Fina,” said Vice President Jeffrey Fina. He added that leukemia has “hit the family in a direct way.”
Although Fina said that they have supported this charity in previous years, this marks the first the time that they have been involved specifically with the Light the Night Walk. The Queens walk took place on October 13, 2007 in Forest Park. More than 100 Michael C. Fina employees walked in it.
Before the walk began, company CEO Mark Ellis said that their goal was to raise $25,000. After all of the efforts by the approximately 350 employees at Michael C. Fina, over $43,000 was raised, which was then matched by the company.
“I think we have a very, very dedicated employee base and if we give the direction that we are really going to support this whole heartedly…they’re going to support it 100 percent because in essence we are one big family,” Fina said. “It was just a great example of our company coming together for a common goal.”
Michael Osso, the Executive Director of the New York City Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, described such a sizeable amount as having a “tremendous impact.” Along with increasing the amount of money the organization has to work towards its mission, Osso said it has helped the society to realize other corporate possibilities for the Queens walk in future years.
“We’re so thrilled to have established a relationship with these new friends,” Osso said. “They’ve been phenomenal.”
Fina extended the company’s gratitude to the many employees who made it possible for so much to be raised. He also said that Michael C. Fina will definitely get involved with the Light the Night Walk again next year and that they “won’t fall short of what we did this year.”
“It feels fabulous,” Fina said of the accomplishment. “It’s always great when we can make such a difference like we did.”
