Student shopping bag contest

This month the D’Agostino Supermarket chain is holding a contest to redesign the company’s iconic New York shopping bag and they have asked city students to help with the redesigning effort. The winning student will receive a $1,000 scholarship and a $500 gift certificate good at any D’Agostino.
The D’Agostino student competition comes in the wake of a plastic bag mandate recently passed by the City Council. The ordinance restricts bags that are not environmentally friendly and encourages stores to use recyclable bags.
Supermarket chains with more than five stores or more than 5,000 square feet will be required to place recycling bins in stores, use plastic bags that are clearly marked as recyclable, and accept shoppers’ bags from other stores, as well as shrink wrap and dry-cleaning bags.
The ‘D’AG bag,’ which has become a familiar sight in the New York area, will also change, but Nick D’Agostino III, the Chief Operating Officer of D’Agostino Supermarkets, Inc. is not worried about losing the company’s trademark design.
“We’ve been a part of New York for 75 years and as the city changes, so do we, said D’Agostino. “What remains constant is our dedication to our customers and to giving them the choices they want, so at D’Agostino you can request paper or plastic, and now we are asking the students of the metropolitan area to create our new recyclable bag that you can bring with you each time you shop. By honoring our students and our environment, we’re giving something back to our city.”
If you think you can design the next generation of D’Agostino shopping bags go to www.dagnyc.com to download an entry form and see the template for the bag area size. Submissions must be mailed with your name, address, school, and year of graduation to designcontest@dagnyc.com by the contest deadline – January 30.
The winner will be selected on February 15 and judges will include D’Agostino executives, well-known art directors, graphic designers, and illustrators from the metropolitan area. The winning design will be featured on the new recyclable D’AG Bags, and will be sold at D’Agostino stores all over Manhattan and Westchester.
