At a “surprise” press conference in the fabled Diamond Club recently, the New York Mets announced that native Long Islander Billy Joel will headline the final concert to be held at Shea Stadium.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer will appear on Wednesday, July 16 for the extravaganza, dubbed “The Last Play at Shea” and sponsored by Citi, the nameplate owner of Citi Field, the new home of the Mets.
Joel’s exclusive Shea concert will take place the night after Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game, to be played in the Bronx.
He becomes the first artist in music history to have played all four of Greater New York City’s premier sporting venues: Shea Stadium, Yankee Stadium, Giants Stadium and Madison Square Garden.
Tickets for “The Last Play at Shea” go on sale Saturday, February 16 at 9 a.m. exclusively at www.507TIXX.com.
Citi card members will also have access to purchase preferred seats through Citi’s Private Pass Program, available to all Citi card members at www.privatepass.citi.com.
“Shea Stadium is one of the most hallowed venues in rock & roll history and it’s an honor to help throw Shea the ultimate concert farewell party,” Joel said.
The event will put a punctuation mark on America’s birthplace of stadium rock. Shea Stadium played host to the Beatles August 15, 1965, the first concert to be held at a major sports stadium in the United States.
