Briarwood homeowners awarded $6.8M in sinking houses suit

By Alex Christodoulides

Ira Futterman, one of three attorneys representing the 13 plaintiffs, said the figure was “exactly what we were looking for” and added that the city comptroller's office has approved the amount, which is to be divided among the homeowners according to the extent of the damage.

Futterman said the damage to the houses began in the fall of 2000, when the city hired contractor CAC to repair a broken water main in the area. In January 2001, 13 houses near the intersection of 159th Street and 84th Avenue developed cracks in their foundations and walls and began to sink after water flowing from the improperly repaired pipes caused the soil around the houses to settle.
