A crowd of about 200 dignitaries, elected officials and military veterans with service spanning more than 60 years gathered at Queensborough Community College (QCC) recently to open the new Veterans’ Center.
Thanks to a $1 million allocation from City Councilmember Hiram Monserrate, the Center will help student-veterans with tutoring, job placement and counseling in order to help them resume productive civilian life.
Borough President Helen Marshall (right) lauded the effort and congratulated QCC President Eduardo Mart’ (second from right) and the school for “again showing leadership,” at the ceremony on Wednesday, April 2.
City University Vice Chancellor and Vietnam veteran Garrie Moore (left) noted QCC’s history of helping veterans and said of those now serving, “We need to be ready for them when they return.”
Mayor Bloomberg’s best wishes were conveyed by his Deputy Commissioner for Veterans Affairs, Clarice Joynes.
City Councilmembers Tony Avella (second left) Helen Sears (fourth from left) and David Weprin (fifth from left) also made brief remarks.
QCC student and veteran Harold Barnhill (third from left) did his part by holding the ribbon, while the officials, including Stanley Rustin, Director of Counseling, QCC (third from right) did the cutting.
