Arts & Biz is a legit contender

By Marc Raimondi

Keith Horan knew he had a talented team, perhaps even the best in the Queens A-VI division. But two weeks ago, the Arts & Business girls' soccer team even surprised its coach. On May 4, the Bulls won the Elaine Hals Memorial Soccer Tournament at James Madison HS, defeating city powers Stuyvesant and defending PSAL Class A champion McKee/Staten Island Tech en route to the championship.

“My girls really showed me a lot that day,” Horan said. “I'm really excited for the playoffs…I really hope we can maintain this intensity level.”

Arts & Business is led by Jessica Figueroa, one of the best players in Queens, and steady midfielder Stephanie Rivas. Both juniors are at the top of the division in scoring. They also both were in junior high when the Bulls won the 'B' city title in 2004 and 2005. Now, they're striving to carve out their own legacy in the higher league.

“We can play with any of those teams,” Horan said. “We're not a 'B' team anymore.”
