While most students in Bayside were enjoying their spring breaks last week by sleeping in, a group of MS 158 students braved cloudy skies and early morning hours Monday to show their support for Earth Day and a living “green.”
The group of 11 students were chosen as finalists in an Earth-friendly art competition for the Go Green Expo, a trade show on green initiatives for businesses, and were asked to talk about their artwork in a live interview with Fox 5 Morning News.
DaMin Toon, a seventh-grader, was chosen as the contest's winner by organic food company Organic Valley, Go Green Expo CEO and President Bradford Rand said. His artwork was featured in the New York Post's “Go Green” section Tuesday.
Although only one student could be chosen as the winner, many of the contest's runner-ups came from MS 158, Rand said. All of the students' artwork will be featured at the Go Green Expo April 26 to 27 at the The Hilton New York hotel in Manhattan, said MS 158 Principal Marie Nappi.
During their appearance on the morning news, the students held copies of their own colorful drawings, rendering their interpretation of what it means to be green in New York City.
