Centro Hispano Cuzcatln, the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation (GJDC), Boy Scout Troop 333 of Queens Village and local residents joined forces with the NYC Parks Department in celebrating “It’s My Park Day” in King Park on Saturday, May 17.
Over 150 people attended the event, which included the planting of over 100 new plants along Jamaica Avenue, litter clean-up, as well as pinatas, face painting, games, and food later on.
As the fourth event of an ongoing collaborative initiative between Jamaica-area groups, It’s My Park Day brought together the various populations for the common cause of caring for King Park.
The event was organized by Centro Hispano Cuzcatlan and GJDC — members of the new Immigrants & Parks Collaborative. The collaborative consists of 10 community organizations working in eight parks across the city to connect immigrant New Yorkers with their local parks in ways that engage and benefit the entire community.
The project brings neighbors from all walks of life together to beautify their parks and strengthen their communities. By getting more local residents involved in parks programming, design, horticulture, and volunteer projects, the project hopes to make the city’s open spaces truly reflective of its diverse communities.
