Former St. Mary’s point guard Aleek Pauline has verbally committed to Norfolk State of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, three years after leaving the Long Island school.
The South Jamaica native attended prep school for one year and spent two more at Reedley Community College in California, where he made the all-rookie team, the all-conference team, and was named the team’s MVP after averaging 12 points and six assists per game in his only season of action. He sat out last year to maintain his three years of eligibility.
Pauline, 20, a 6-foot-2 combo guard, drew plenty of Division I interest while at St. Mary’s in 2005, playing alongside the Green brothers, Danny and Rashad. But he wasn’t qualified academically. It was an agonizing couple of years, living away from home while in search of a lifelong dream.
“A lot of times I felt close - coaches would call and promise me a scholarship, but then they wouldn’t call back - someone would tell me they signed someone else,” he said. “It just feels good to finally get a scholarship.”
