The York College Summer Jazz Program will audition potential participants for its 2008 session from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 14.
The program, which began in 2005, is a scholarship program that enables students to learn more about jazz music while also earning five college credits. It focuses on jazz history, jazz performance and music theory.
Sophomores and juniors attending New York City public high schools are eligible to participate in the York College Summer Jazz Program. Although no previous jazz experience is necessary, “students must have basic proficiency on a big band instrument” and they are required to know how to read music.
The 2008 summer program will run from June 30 to August 7. Students will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Students will also be provided with books, Metro Card and lunch vouchers.
The auditions and the actual program will be held at York College, which is located at 94-45 Guy R. Brewer Boulevard in Jamaica.
