Coach Mary Boyle wouldn’t take off her red Flushing softball hoodie despite the 90-degree heat. Senior shortstop Ruth Lugo had to tape together her mangled right sneaker. Senior catcher Brittany Brown would have run through a wall — and she almost did — for a victory.
The superstitious third-seeded Red Devils scratched out a 6-5, extra-inning win against No. 4 Manhattan Center to force a decisive second game in the double-elimination PSAL Class B softball championships Sunday. But the aforementioned heat caused Flushing, the oldest school in New York City in its first softball championship ever, to sputter in an 11-4 loss in Game 2 at Long Island University in Brooklyn.
“I told them, win or lose, you’ve made history, regardless of what the outcome of the game is,” Boyle said.
Added Co-captain Sharlene Salazar: “Just making it this far is good enough.”
