A man who robbed a check-cashing store in Maspeth was shot by the clerk before escaping with money, police said.
The suspect entered the store at around 9 a.m. June 5 and announced the robbery, when retired Correction Officer John Sergio opened fire on the suspect. Blood found at the scene leads police to believe the suspect was hit.
The suspect drove off with $30,000, in what is described as a late model, maroon-colored vehicle. A gray or white SUV was also seen leaving the area at the same time, but it is unclear if it is connected to the robbery. Police are currently searching for the suspect.
