Kids have fun at PAL carnival

On August 6, 700 children, ages six to eight, from all five boroughs gathered for the Police Athletic League’s (PAL) annual Mini-Carnival at the PAL Harlem Armory in Manhattan.
PAL’s youngest day campers from the PAL Foster Laurie Center in Hollis, PAL Goldie Maple Academy Beacon in Arverne, PAL P.S. 214 Center in Flushing and the PAL Edward Byrne Center in Jamaica, enjoyed a fun-filled day of carnival games, hands-on arts and crafts, and inflatable rides.
In addition, groups from each of PAL’s 15 day camps presented their Caribbean Island big book travel brochures based on the 2008 summer theme, “Exploring the Caribbean.”
Throughout the summer, each center was assigned a Caribbean Island to study and learn about the history, geography, and culture of the people. Children then contributed the facts they learned by including them in their big book travel brochures to share with youngsters from other PAL centers.
The Police Athletic League, founded in 1914, has been serving New York City’s young people for more than 90 years. PAL provides recreational, educational, cultural, and social activities to tens of thousands of boys and girls annually. It is the city’s largest, independent, nonprofit youth organization.
