Spanish Heritage Month on WNET

In honor of Spanish Heritage Month in September, WNET, Channel 13, will air original films, documentaries and music as part of Cantos Latinos.
The on-air festival began on Tuesday, September 2 and will air through Sunday, September 28. Cantos Latinos “offers an in-depth look at Latino contributions to our culture and shared national identity and covers a gamut of topics, from art and entertainment to history and politics.”
It continues on Tuesday, September 16 with a screening of “P.O.V.: Calavera Highway” at 10 p.m. The film centers on two brothers who begin a journey to southern Texas to spread their deceased mother’s ashes. Along the way, they reunite with other relatives and discover more about their family’s past.
That same day, from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m., Lourdes Portillo’s “Global Voices: The Devil Never Sleeps” will be aired.
On Wednesday, September 17 beginning at 9:30 p.m., “Los Lonely Boys: Cottonfields and Crossroads” will be shown. This special focuses on the lives of the three brothers who make up the band, which became known throughout the United States with the hit song “How Far is Heaven.”
From 12:30 to 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, there will be two screenings. They will be of “From Curandera to Chupacavra: Stories of R. Anaya” and “Independent Lens: Companneras.”
“Just As We Are” will be aired at 2 a.m. on Friday, September 19. It focuses on six gay Latino men and a transgender woman.
The series premiere of “Spain…On the Road Again” will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 21. The show is about a cross-country road trip taken by actress Gwyneth Paltrow, chef Mario Batali, author and journalist Mark Bittman and actress Claudia Bassols.
Later that night, at 10:30 p.m., the animated film “El Doctor” will be shown.
On Tuesday, September 23, “Global Voices: Discovering Dominga” will be aired at 2:15 a.m., followed by “P.O.V.: Made in L.A. at 3:15 a.m.
Another series premiere will take place at 7 a.m. on Saturday, September 27 with the show “La Plaza: Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One II.” During it, Hinojosa and Latina journalist Mar’a Elena Salinas will talk about topics related to her career and personal life.
Cantos Latinos will conclude on Sunday, September 28 with two screenings. The first will be the second episode of “Spain…On the Road” at 3 p.m. “Omara Portuondo” will then be aired at 10:30 p.m. It is of a performance by Portuondo at the Montreal Jazz Festival.
