Not only did these children grow their own vegetables in the HSBC Children’s Garden at Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) in Flushing, they actually made up batches of Zucchini cookies, veggie chips and other treats from vegetables they grew during the summer - then baked them in solar ovens they built themselves!
The culmination of the summer season came on Thursday, August 21, at the QBG Visitors’ Center, located at 43-50 Main Street in Flushing. The kids learned firsthand how the sun’s energy can be harnessed in different ways.
They fashioned their ovens from pizza boxes and other household materials, experimented with recipes and ingredients, spooned their batches onto foiled trays, and set their ovens outdoors to catch some rays.
Shown here, the budding bakers await their reward, supervised by 2008 QBG interns, Kristyn Harvey (left) and Gale Goldspiel.
