Students at P.S. 87 in Middle Village got a new principal recently. However, the new principal, City Councilmember Anthony Como, was only Principal for a Day. New York elected officials, community and business leaders from all five boroughs experienced first-hand the accomplishments and challenges facing our city’s public schools as part of PENCIL’s Principal for a Day program.
The goal of the event is for participants to translate their one-day experiences into long-term relationships that enhance the learning environments at their schools and support student achievement.
“It was a wonderful experience being Principal for a Day and interacting with teachers and children in a classroom setting,” Como said. I have a tremendous respect and admiration for the work performed by school administrators, teachers, counselors and support staff.”
Como gave special thanks to P.S. 87 Principal Caryn Michaeli, Assistant Principal Melissa Guarino, Assistant Principal Carolyn Symborouras, Parent Coordinator Nicholas Dagnell, CEO of Knowledge Network Dr. Kathleen Caschin, PTA President Carlos Mercado, as well as other teachers and parents for all their hard work and dedication to the children of our community.
