The Queens Zoo welcomed the arrival of a pair of Jacob’s four-horned sheep. The sheep, which is an ancient breed of its kind that goes back almost 3,000 years, have been delighting both the zoo staff and its visitors.
The sheep are the newest addition to the Zoo’s Wildlife Conservation Society and are characterized by their thick coats of spotted black and white wool.
Both sheep, called “ewes” since they are female, have adjusted to their new home and are getting along very well with the other farm animals.
Although the Jacob’s four-horns are too young to mate now, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which works to save rare species around the world, may breed these and others of their breed.
The pair now brings the Queen’s Zoo sheep count to 20, among those being baby doll and Suffolk sheep.
The Queens Zoo is located at 53-51 111th Street in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. It’s open from 10 to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays and 10 to 5 p.m. on weekends.
