A keen-eyed off-duty cop may have succeeded in getting a Christmas Grinch put on ice for the holidays.
According to a department source, the off-duty police Sergeant happened to be passing by 11th Avenue in College Point on Monday December 8. As he approached the corner of 128th Street shortly after 1 p.m., he observed 22-year-old Richard Aybar in the fenced-in backyard of 11-02 128th Street, a private house.
The off-duty Sergeant said he saw Aybar emerge with a UPS parcel that he stashed in a garbage can. He notified his brothers in blue.
Cops from the 109th Precinct allegedly found the parcel in the can and arrested Aybar. Two other men who were allegedly waiting on the sidewalk were not arrested.
The alleged Grinch was brought before Queens Judge Robert McGann on Tuesday, December 9 where he was charged with possession of stolen property in a criminal complaint by Queens DA Richard A. Brown.
Apparently the Grinch business hasn’t been all that good.
Aybar, of 135-03 14th Avenue, also in College Point, was sent packing to Rikers Island, until his $500 bail was paid on Sunday, December 14.
He’s due back in court on Thursday, January 8. If he’s convicted, he could get up to 90 days in jail.
Crime prevention officers suggest that if you’re expecting a parcel and know you aren’t going to be home, either ask an at-home neighbor to get it for you or have it held for pick-up.
