Officers arrested two suspects wanted in connection with a string of robberies of food deliverymen and others.
On Wednesday, Janaury 21, Police Officers Lisaura Mesa and Jose Velez, Jr.—after having been shown video footage of the suspects from one of five prior robberies—were canvassing the area around 37th Avenue and 23rd Street when they observed two individuals fitting the description. A recent victim of the duo identified them, say police, and the suspects, Luis Navarro, 19, and Jemal Mays, also 19, were arrested and charged with robbery in the second degree.
As a result of this ongoing investigation two additional arrests were made on Friday, January 23. Edward Edwards, 18 and Corey King, 19, were also charged with robbery in the second degree.
Police say their string of robberies began on January 12 when they allegedly punched a victim in the head and stole his Sidekick cell phone. Four days later, in the Ravenswood Houses, they allegedly violently attacked and robbed a deliveryman from the Bellaire Diner.
On January 20, again in the housing project, the four victimized another food deliveryman from the diner, taking his cash, cell phone and even the food he had been delivering. That same day, the suspects allegedly placed a 57-year-old man in a choke hold at 33rd Road and 21st Street, where they took his cash and electronics. He was taken to Cornell Hospital with trauma to his head.
And again on January 20, the perps beat up and took cash from a 26-year-old man walking to his home.
