Whatever happened to spending quality time with our family? With the current state of financial affairs, maybe it is time we look to have fun in some old−fashioned and cost−efficient way. Doing things that do not cost a lot of money can open new doors in terms of what we put value on.
First off, remember that children are inventive and can have fun just about anywhere and doing just about anything. Telling our kids we are going on a secret mission and taking them to the botanical garden costs zero dollars. The only expense we may incur is a surprise ice cream treat.
Queens has a variety of low−cost but fun family things to do. For example, admission to the Queens Zoo in Flushing costs $7 for adults and $3 for children. For $20 you, your spouse and two kids can gain admission. If you want to save even more money, you can pack lunch and make a picnic out of it.
Queens also boasts Flushing Meadows Corona Park. How about taking a bike ride or playing some games? I remember growing up and playing Wiffleball with my family. If Citi Field is going to be out of your budget, how about going to high school or college games?
If you are single or dating, how about taking a walk together and seeing the Unisphere, then going home to have a barbecue?
Do not be afraid to have a family meeting or be honest with your significant other about having to tighten your belt. Coming up with plans together and making a real game out of how little you can spend each weekend can actually be fun.
So How’s Business regarding saving money while still having quality time with your family? History has taught us that great memories are made in tight times. We could all learn a lot more about enjoying things from just watching what our kids do.
