As the death toll neared 300 and the number of homeless skyrocketed to 55,000, L’Aquila, Italy was rocked by yet another aftershock on Monday, April 13.
Only a week before, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook the city in the Abruzzo region, about 70 miles outside of Rome.
With relief efforts underway, “The damage has been extensive,” said Andrea Mantineo, Editor of Italian newspaper America Oggi. “Very old towns and historic places have been destroyed.”
In the days following the quake, relatives wondered and worried, but, according to Mantineo, the Italian government has set up a number concerned families can call for information – 011390668203229.
He said that the Italian government is hoping for a quick recovery and reconstruction from what was reportedly the deadliest earthquake to hit Italy in 30 years.
An ocean away, the “A Song for Abruzzo” concert will be held on May 10 at 5 p.m. at Christ the King High School, 68-02 Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village.
The concert will be sponsored by the Associazione Culturale Italiana Di New York and in cooperation with COM.IT.ES. NYCT. For more information on the fundraiser, call Tony Di Piazza at 718-821-3582.
