Despite talk about ecology and improving the air we breathe, the recent decision by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to raise fares will take the city in the wrong direction. The increase in mass transit fares and reduction in service will encourage more people to use their cars for the daily commute.
The MTA must present a balanced budget. This cannot be accomplished through layoffs and cost−cutting. The state Legislature must keep mass transit affordable for the working men and women of the metropolitan area.
